☆ Timothy Olyphant Is Back for a New Chapter of ‘Justified’

That combination proved perfect for the darkly comic, morally murky world of “Justified.” Olyphant’s performance in the series shifted his previously hit-and-miss career into a higher gear, which in turn has made his future prospects less dependent on the success of the “Justified” revival. Premiering Thursday on Max, the gripping six-episode serial revolves around a botched kidnapping with international repercussions. “Full Circle” was directed by Steven Soderbergh, the latest on a list of talented people with whom Olyphant long wanted to work and now has. Kenneth Lonergan made him the center of his acclaimed play “Hold On to Me Darling” (2016). “You can throw Larry David on the list,” Olyphant said, referring to his appearance as a smarmy groom in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in 2020.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.

Boots Riley doesn’t aim small. In his magnificently batty TV series, “I’m a Virgo,” which arrives on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, the screen may be smaller. “People are always afraid,” his aunt says, “and you are a 13-foot-tall Black man.”As he approaches adulthood, the walls and door frames of the house can’t take the arrangement much longer. Neither can Cootie, who longs to see a world that he’s experienced only through TV commercials and comic books. He sneaks out, makes friends with some young neighbors — they take him on a joyride, Cootie squatting on the car as if it were a skateboard — and meets the world.

One of Cootie’s first rebellions is his insistence on trying a Bing Bang Burger, whose comically unappealing commercials he sees constantly on TV. It is fastidiously, hilariously committed to the bit, constantly doubling down on the logistics of Cootie’s bigness. “I’m a Virgo” comes on the heels of a few ingenious experiments in TV surrealism, from “Atlanta” to “Undone” to the recent farce “Mrs. Its fantastical concept works in metaphor just the same way it works in fact, as it reminds us with proud bluntness. “I’m a Virgo” is a visual and ideological counterpoint to all this.
